Consignment at North Gait

Thank you for reaching out about selling your horse.

I believe that a horse's best chance at a successful career—and at avoiding being passed from home to home—is solid training. As a horse owner, it’s your responsibility to invest in educating your horse or to send him to a skilled trainer, giving him the best opportunity for a fulfilling life. No one wants their horse to end up in an undesirable situation, so please, be a responsible owner and ensure your horse is properly trained. If you need help with training, in order to sell your horse, we can assist you.

I am selective about the horses I work with, as I take my name and reputation seriously. I will not accept horses with serious behavioral issues such as bucking, rearing, bolting, or pulling,or otherwise dangerous behaviors. I do not accept horses with chronic health issues for consignment and prefer not to sell untrained stock.

Please note that my availability for consignment spots is based on my current barn capacity. If my barn is full, I cannot take on new consignments.

General Consignment Information

Consignment Fee:
The consignment fee is $600 or 15% of the final sale price of the horse, whichever is greater. Payment to the owner will be made after the sale is finalized and payment has cleared. The trainer will deduct any outstanding amounts owed (including board, vet, farrier care, supplements, etc.) from the final payment to the owner.

Owner Responsibilities:

  • The owner is responsible for all transportation of the horse unless prior arrangements are made.

  • The owner assumes responsibility for all veterinary and farrier fees while the horse is on consignment.

  • The horse must have a current coggins test and be up to date on hoof care, vaccinations, and dental care before being listed for sale.

  • The owner will pay for pasture board and a conditioning fee of $475 per month per horse until the horse sells. Board is due on the first day of the month. If the horse sells mid-month, board will be prorated.

  • The owner may provide any additional supplements or grain required, and the trainer will feed them as instructed.

  • The owner is required to provide the trainer with all relevant information about the horse, including age, breed, registration details (if applicable), experience level, health history, and any known vices.

Trainer Services:

  • The trainer will evaluate the horse to determine the best discipline and rider level for the horse.

  • The horse owner is responsible for setting the listing price, though the trainer will suggest a price based on market conditions, the horse’s age, and experience.

  • The trainer will create a sale advertisement and production of a sale video.

  • The trainer will actively promote the horse, show it to potential buyers, and facilitate all negotiations related to the sale.

Termination of Contract:

  • This consignment agreement is not binding for a specific length of time. Both the owner and the trainer reserve the right to terminate the agreement at any time.

  • The horse may be transported from the trainer’s facility only after all board and outstanding expenses have been paid.

  • The trainer will not hold a horse indefinitely on consignment. After 45 days, the owner and trainer may agree to lower the sale price or terminate the consignment agreement. In either case, the horse will be removed from the trainer’s property after all debts to the trainer are settled.

Sale Finalization:

  • All sales made under this consignment agreement are final.

  • The trainer does not offer buy-back clauses or trial periods for horses sold under consignment.

Auction, Kill Buyer, and Slaughter Clause:

  • The trainer will sell all consignment horses under a contract that explicitly forbids them from being sold at auction or to a kill buyer or slaughter buyer.

  • If the horse is to be resold in the future, the trainer requests the first right of refusal and reserves the right to assist in finding the horse a suitable placement.

Thank you for reaching out. If your horse is accepted for consignment, we will send you a consignment contract and arrange a delivery date.
